Sled Dogs After Dinner Close Their Eyes on the Howling Wastes

Crazy weather this week! O went to school two days out of five. We’ve been going a bit stir crazy in the house. Driving hasn’t been safe and we don’t really have the appropriate weather gear for playing in snow that is accompanied by 20 degree temperatures and 30 mph biting winds. We only lost power once (on the one non-windy day that didn’t have snow - go figure), but the wind is supposed to pick up tonight and bring ice and freezing rain with it, so you never know!

The wind is blowing the snow into drifts, and we can hear people a block away whooping and playing on the hill at the park. We are happy to have so many board games, which don’t require electricity (except lights to see what we are doing!).  Right now XM’s favorite game to play is Sorry Sliders. You may remember Sorry, the excruciatingly long board game where you might finally have one of your four pawns close to home base (if you can ever get it out of the start square), only to hear “sorry!” and have him sent to start again.

Well Sorry Sliders is much more fun, even the 4 year old can play it with some help. The game comes with many different ways to set up the boards, allowing for a wide variety of game styles to keep it interesting. Plus who doesn’t love sliding pieces with little ball bearings in them down a ramp?

Well I’ll Be A Monkey’s Birthday

XM’s 4th birthday is in two days, and she isn’t letting anyone forget it! She sat me down about a month ago and dictated everything she wanted: pink cake flavored cake (since amended to cupcakes), pink frosting with a cherry on top, pink ice cream, pink balloons…

The other day she pushed O around in her little shopping cart. His job was to hold the paper with the birthday demands and announce over and over in a microphone “It’s almost Xiao Miao’s birthday! It’s almost Xiao Miao’s birthday! It’s almost Xiao Miao’s birthday!”

One thing that O asked me to do for her birthday that will be a surprise is a pinata. You may remember I made him a Piplup pinata last year for his birthday - he asked me to make her a Hello Kitty. I finished it last night, just in time! It is filled with 96 crayons and some Hershey kisses.

We may be snowed in on Thursday, but at least we’ll have fun!

Snoopy Claus

I couldn’t find Snoopy last year so we had to buy an actual sparkly star tree topper. Now that he is back in teh game O insisted Snoopy rule the treetop once more. I think we’ll have to alternate each year…

Pssst, Gay Marriage Will Save the Economy

Pass it on.

Ahhhh Geek Out

So I posted way back in July about our newfangled board game habits. It has grown, my friends. Oh, how it has grown.

I mean, it isn’t our fault that people buy multiple copies of games, or guys get married to gals that aren’t as keen on the gaming as they are, and they end up selling off chunks of their collections for a song. Or that the games aisle at Goodwill has become our new best friend. We just find ourselves in the right place at the right time. It would be criminal not to buy them.

And when Fred Meyer had so many Heroscape sets on clearance over the summer, how could we not buy them? Or the expansions? Or the super cheap sets from the guy moving to Yemen?

I have more to say - and I’ve been meaning to blog more and failing spectacularly - so rather than make this a giant board game post of doom I’ll break it up into future posts chock full of board gamey goodness. Aren’t you excited?
