Goodreads
I love books. Oddly, I am not a huge fan of browsing bookstores.
I have been trying to keep track of the books I want to read via my library hold system. This used to work for me in Estacada because I did a lot of work for the library, so they let me put lots on hold and waved my fines. It was a sweet, sweet deal. Now I’m limited to 15 holds in the Multnomah County system like every other schmuck, and currently owe $.75. At any rate, my hold log gets clogged up while I wait. I’m currently 38 of 65 holds on 11 copies of Young Indiana Jones. I put it on hold a good 3-4 months ago. I have others like that, inluding a hold on something that hasn’t actually entered the library system yet.
Then I discovered Goodreads. I can log books that I have read, rate them with stars, review them, and even create my own shelving system (Currently my “read” shelf has ‘read’ (basically any fiction), graphic novels, non-fiction, and abandoned). But best of all, you can mark a book as “to read”. !!! I have 60 books in that section. It is so wonderful. Now I don’t have to worry about forgetting when I run across a book I find interesting. You can have friends, or not, but if you do you can see what they are reading too. You can find me here.
I also love that you can follow little paths and discover all sorts of cool things. Through the two books I’m currently reading - Michael Chabon’s “Maps and Legends” and Neil Gaiman’s “Fragile Things” - I’ve discovered a volume of short stories (”McSweeney’s Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales”) that I might like to read. From the info page for that book I can see what other people thought of it, books that are similar, and lists or book clubs that it is a part of. Tomorrow, the world!
