“I know what I was like when I was a kid, and I was constantly thinking about star wars and talking in that strange kind of codified language that children do because my whole entire world was wrapped around it…”
This has got to be the most ridiculous waste of money I’ve ever seen - the Waring Pro Professional Martini Maker. That’s right, you too can spend $100 on a shaker that fits in its own special housing so that you can simply add the two very difficult to measure ingredients for your martini before deliberating on the toughest decision ever. Shaken, or stirred? Press the appropriate button and voila! Mixed for you! Only suckers spend $14.99 on a cocktail shaker to mix their drinks by hand. No more Martini Elbow as a result of those vigorous 20 seconds of shaking, no more carpel tunnel from having to grip the spoon to stir it up. Bartenders must feel like such fools…
…we were in a room meeting a very scared and sad little girl for the first time. It is truly amazing to see how she has blossomed into a confident and funny and happy little person, and that she has adjusted to life in this crazy family of ours. It really is like she has always been here.

I can’t even come up with a title. I’ve been dreading writing this post, but I have to do it.
It is really, really hard to say goodbye to your pet even when their health is in decline and you know the end is inevitable. It is a special kind of hell to have your dog be fine at 9pm, only to find yourself making the decision to let him go before he dies of massive internal bleeding just two hours later.
Apparently Gordon had a huge, probably cancerous tumor in his abdomen, and it ruptured.
It was so horrible. I can’t even think about it. I wasn’t and am still not ready to say goodbye. He was the greatest fucking dog.
GordonDiefenbaker was a lab mix who hated going in the water and had a tail that curled. He had the softest ears of any animal in the world ( when he was a puppy we made him promise us to never let his soft ears go away, and he kept that promise). He was almost 12.
a handsome pup…
just a blur of fur…
tail at full curl…
our beautiful Boo.
Our sweet pups, enjoying the sun. We miss them both terribly.

…before he becomes jaded like every other kid.
O is getting a cold, so I told him on the way to school that if he feels really icky at school, he can tell his teacher and I’ll come get him. He was utterly confused by the idea of leaving school early, and said “why would I want to miss out on learning?”

I drove by this statue of George Washington on the corner of Sandy and NE 57th. Apparently he hasn’t recovered from his drunken Halloween revelry, as he is still wearing a big grass hula skirt. I couldn’t pull my camera phone out quick enough to snap a shot…

Halloween actually turned out to be fun. I say this because last year O tripped a lot over his Darth Vader cape and finished the evening in a sobbing meltdown, and I figured this year XM would be her usual ornery self and not want to wear her costume.
The costumes went well, and the kids even let me put something warm on underneath. Our neighborhood didn’t have tons of kids (we counted 55 at our house) but there were a lot of houses passing out candy and everyone that did so was really friendly and having as good a time as the trick or treaters. Two houses even offered the adult chaperones some hot spiced cider! Pretty cool. We have way too much candy now, left over and new, so we’ll have to hide it from me, because I will eat it all day.
Our feats of carving (O is trying to be scary like his pumpkin):
