Littering our noise on the Earth

The snow this year has been ridiculous. It waits, lurking in a swirling storm out over the ocean, until Derek takes half a day off of work to do something, at which point it pounces, pinning down the metro area with its cold, wet paws. Right now we should have already toured Woodstock Elementary’s Mandarin Immersion Program, and been getting our CO2 canister filled so we could go on our merry way to Laurelwood, where a keg of Boss IPA awaits. But hey, the deadline to apply for this program is only like two weeks away, so, you know, no hurry or anything.
Even the poor robins look annoyed. They showed up yesterday, hope springing eternal, and now they are relegated to a small circle of grass under our giant cedar, looking at the snow and freezing their little feet off.
Owen is getting a cold so we made him stay home from school, so we are all stuck in the house. The final straw was the email Derek got from work, letting him know today was “Celebrate February Birthdays” day, and there would be cake for everyone. Almond Roca Cake. I’ve whipped together some chocolate cupcakes, with peanut butter frosting that is OMFGoodness delicious. In your face, weather!

Okay, lets see if I can remember how to post on here…
Happy 4705!!! We ventured into the world of the Chinese New Year full bore (Heh). Today we went to the Portland Classical Chinese Garden and watched a really great lion dance.

O got his picture taken next to one of the lions. They are so wonderfully expressive - their eyelids flutter and their ears waggle. XM was afraid of them, so we had to fake her picture.

We also got to see a calligraphy demonstration, which was cool because O painted his own calligraphy for our New Year celebration at home. The left one is the character for good luck, and the right one is the character for good fortune.

We made as many traditional New Year foods as we could, starting with appetizers of candied fruits (the candied young coconut are amazing, and the candied melon is totally refreshing) and nuts and seeds. Our main meal consisted of jiaozi (dumplings, which in our case were potstickers), tiny fried spring rolls, lettuce wraps with faux ham, green onion pancakes (which I didn’t find listed as something traditional, but we love them so, we couldn’t leave them out) and noodles. Thanks Fubonn market, for all the nummy food. Now if they’d only import that Guang’s Pineapple Beer that I love so much…

Thanks for following us to our new blog. We’ll be trying out a new look in the near future, but for now, enjoy the splendor that is the default WordPress template! Now an introduction to the newest incarnation of the Atlansky blog. (which is also the text if you go to the About page…now you don’t have to go there…I saved you a whole click…your welcome.)
The name of this blog comes from the name of a great Rheostatics song called, oddly enough, Rock! Death! America! The tagline (”Littering our noise on the Earth”) is from the aforementioned song.
I started blogging on June 25, 2003 at whomppower.blogspot.com. All posts from that blog, were copied over to this blog when it was created on February 19, 2007.
Now that the readership of this blog has skyrocketed from the humble zero readers in 2003 to the mind-boggling four in 2007, I thought it was time to make good on my promise. From the original post on June 25, 2003:
I’m just trying this blog thing out and wanted to make sure I would actually post to it before taking the time to move it to my own server.
I also promised that I would move it to my own server
…right after I do the other things I planned on doing soon — writing an MP3 server in .NET, becoming a virtuoso on the guitar, becoming the world disc golf champion, etc.
Well, after 3.5 years, I can now say that I accomplished something — I moved my blog to my own server (well…I guess I didn’t really do that as it is hosted elsewhere…but I do have a lot more control over it than I did on blogspot.com!)
You have probably noticed that the wife is the one who posts now. This is mostly due to the fact that I am usually working, doing tech support for Lesley, or drunk. Perhaps when I accomplish my next goal of being world disc golf champion, I’ll have time to post again. At this rate, I figure this will happen on September 14, 2037.
Now where did my beer go…

So life, it seems has been relegated to funny television and cupcakes, while we wait for one of these yahoos that looks at our house to make an offer.
The Knights of Prosperity was a complete surprise to us, in that we assumed it would be as un-funny as the rest of the sitcoms on television. Not so, my friends. Pretty darn giggle worthy. Just little jabs of wit here and there, mixed in with some decidedly hilarious props to round it out. Plus the theme song they came up with for their little crime organization? Tom Sawyer. (OMG I found the actual clip from show!)
We’ve also been watching Black Books on BBC America, which I think originally aired a few years back and they are now re-running on BBCA. Anyway, it is so hard to describe why this show is funny, it just is, consistently.
Okay, so I made Chai Latte Cupcakes for the Superbowl. (C for Chicago, C for Colts, C for Chai. Get it?) They were…okay. I mean, they tasted good, but not mind-blowing. I expected more from them, I guess. Managed to choke down three all the same.

So yesterday I made Maple Cupcakes with Candied Walnuts, and Oh! Canada they are divine. My fingers still smell like maple.
